Bank of China began to issue Hong Kong dollar notes on 1 May 1994.
According to "Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (Merger) Ordinance" passed on 12 July 2001, "all banknotes issued by the Bank of China before its merger are to remain legal tender after the merger. They are obligations of the Bank of China (Hong Kong)."
