BOCHK Hackathon 2019 FAQ



  • Do I have to pay to join the competition?
    We will not charge participants for joining the competition, but the participants should bear the additional costs incurred during the competition (such as transportation fees, or purchase of computer equipment or applications).
  • Do I have to be a resident of HKSAR to participate in the competition?
    The competition is open to all participants, including HKSAR residents and non-HKSAR residents.
  • Do you have any requirements for the age of the participants?
    Applicants must be at or above the age of 18 and at or below the age of 35 (as of 19th December 2019, which is the final day of BOCHK Hackathon 2019).
  • Is there a limit on the size of the team?
    We require that the team should be consist of 1 to 5 people.
  • Can students from different universities or other higher education institutions form a team?
    Yes, participants from all educational institutions are eligible to join the competition.
  • Can students and working professionals form a team?
    Yes, team members with different occupations (students/working professionals) can form a team.
  • Do I need to have a substantial understanding in Information Technology to join the FinTech Hackathon?
    Since BOCHK Hackathon 2019 is a competition combined with innovation and technology, participants are therefore required to have basic IT knowledge, such as basic Coding skills. We will also hold a series of Fintech Workshops during the competition to provide more guidance to participants.
  • How many stages are there in the competition?
    Applicants are only required to submit proposed ideas and business concepts in the registration stage; If you or your team are shortlisted to the final competition, we will arrange a series of FinTech Workshop including AI, IoT, NLP, Cloud, Big Data as well as Banking products and services APIs such as Credit Card, Deposit, Insurance, Investment, Mortgage and Loans, etc to enhance your knowledge; On the final day (24-hour Hackathon), you or your team will have 24 hours to build the prototype with access to the APIs provided, then, you will be invited to demonstrate your works to impress our jury panel of senior executives, and strive to win our prizes.

  • How do the judges assess each team?
    • Creativity - Ability to generate novel solutions and creative ideas to solve problems.
    • Ability to solve business pain point - Satisfying current and future business needs.
    • Design Interface and User Experience - Innovative design interface to provide better user experience.
    • Feasibility and Execution - Feasibility to launch the product and solution.
    • Business Opportunity - Breeding and expanding new business models from disruptive products and solutions.
  • If I accidentally submitted the wrong proposal/attachments, can I amend it?
    Alterations cannot be made to proposals once they have been submitted.
  • Can I add, delete or replace team members during the competition?
    You may add, delete or replace your team member, but you have to inform us by 13th December (one week before the 24-hour Hackathon). On the 24-hour Hackathon Day, participants are required to show valid identification document or student ID card for verification
  • I am an employee of the event organizer, am I applicable to join the competition?
    Employees of Bank of China (Hong Kong) and its subsidiaries, as well as other supporting organizations of the competition, are not allowed to participate in the competition and have no right to win any prizes.
