ESG Journey

As a corporate citizen, we are committed to sustainable development

We started our ESG journey more than a decade ago. Through a step-by-step process of exploration, research and innovation, we continue to advance our sustainability strategy in pursuit of ESG excellence. Ultimately, we expect this to result in long term value creation for our stakeholders.

2010 - 2012 2010 - 2012
  • Set up the CSR Committee which is chaired by the Chief Executive, and formulated the CSR Policy
  • Published our first standalone CSR Report
2013 - 2014 2013 - 2014
  • Formulated ESG-related policies including our Environmental Policy, Supply Chain Code of Conduct, Board Diversity Policy, etc.
2015 - 2016 2015 - 2016
  • Sponsored the “BOCHK Corporate Environmental Leadership Awards Programme” since 2015 to encourage enterprises in Hong Kong and the Pan-Pearl River Delta region to practise environmental protection, reduce pollution and carbon emissions
  • Signed and participated in the 4T partnership dialogue platform launched by the Environment Bureau of the HKSAR Government
2017 - 2018 2017 - 2018
  • Supported the HKMA’s financial inclusion agenda, launched a branch transformation programme, and enhanced SME services
  • Issued the “Bank of China (Hong Kong) Centenary Commemorative Banknote” and donated all net proceeds to local charitable causes
2019 - 2020 2019 - 2020
  • Established the Board-level Sustainability Committee
  • Verified the Sustainability Report by an independent third party since 2019
  • Active participant in the Hong Kong Green Finance Association
  • Provided charitable organisations with the “E-Donate Platform” to increase efficiency in handling donations
  • Pioneered five major financial relief schemes and introduced employee care initiatives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Formulated the 2021 – 2025 Sustainability Plan
  • Launched several pioneering green products, including Hong Kong’s first green mortgage loan
  • Announced our own operational net-zero target
  • Collaborated with S&P Dow Jones Indices to launch the first GBA Net Zero 2050 Climate Transition Index
  • Received highest MSCI ESG rating of AAA for two consecutive years
  • Named “Best Bank for CSR in Hong Kong” by Asiamoney for the fourth time
  • Named “ESG and CSR Market Leader in Hong Kong” by Euromoney

  • Listed in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook (China Edition) 2024
  • Become a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series for the first time
  • “Low Risk” Rating from ESG risk rating institute Sustainalytics
  • The first bank in Hong Kong to achieve carbon neutrality in its owned properties
  • Formulated and disclosed the “ESG Sensitive Sector Strategy Statement”, “Carbon Offset Strategy Statement”, “Administrative Measures for Greenwashing Risk Management” and “BOCHK Green and Sustainable Finance Taxonomy”
  • The first ETF in Hong Kong that tracks an ESG index with investments in the Greater Bay Area
  • Launched Hong Kong’s first mobile banking spending management and carbon footprint tracking feature
  • Received “Employer of the Year – Grand Award” in the Best HR Awards 2023 and 2024 by CTgoodjobs
  • Named “Asia-Pacific Climate Leaders” by Financial Times for three consecutive years

  • Received the highest “AAA” rating from MSCI ESG Ratings in 2025, securing the Group’s position as the highest rated bank among its Hong Kong peers
  • Retained its status as a constituent of the FTSE4GoodIndex Series and included in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook (China Edition) 2025 and 2026
  • Ranked first in the four aspects of the “Business Sustainability Index” organised by the Centre for Business Sustainability of the CUHK Business School for the first time
  • Recognised as “Hong Kong’s Best Bank for Corporate Responsibility” by Euromoney for the second time, and awarded “Asia-Pacific Climate Leader” by the Financial Times for the fourth consecutive year
  • Hosted the “BOCHK Green Forum 2025”, marking the first carbon-neutral international financial forum hosted by a Hong Kong bank
